Common Questions/Misconceptions... |
|
- “Not for my child – he/she is developing just fine.”
Most children will develop “just fine” but baby sign language can give them an advantage over children who do not learn to sign.
- "Will it delay my child’s verbal language?"
Absolutely not. Research has proven that babies who sign actually speak earlier than non-signers!
- "At what age should we begin teaching sign?"
It depends on your own desires and expectations. You can truly begin teaching sign at any age, from birth to older children.
- "How soon can we expect results?"
This will vary depending on a number of factors including the baby’s age, how many people are signing with the baby and how consistently the baby is exposed to sign language. Generally, it takes babies who are about 5 or 6 months old, for example, about 8 to 10 weeks to learn. Most babies do not have the fine motor coordination to form signs with their hands until they are about 8 months old.
- "Do you use ASL? Is it ok to make up our own signs?"
We teach American Sign Language. Yes, it’s ok to make up some of your own signs, but we recommend using the standard, recognized American Sign Language to teach most of the signs. We’ll be happy to explain our reasoning in more detail when we speak with you.
- "Do I need to become a sign language expert?"
No. Most parents teach their babies approximately 20 signs to help them communicate. We suggest that you learn and teach your baby sign language to what ever level you are comfortable with.
